Equal Rights Amendment (ERA); This is an amendment that was first proposed in 1923 by woman's suffrage activist Alice Paul with hopes of gaining equal rights for women in America. These rights included equal pay for equal work effort. It was passed out of Congress in 1972 and has been ratified by 35 of the necessary 38 states. Due to this fact, the ERA is still not part of the U.S. Constitution. If passed, it would become the 28th Amendment of the Constitution. The Georgia legislature has still not ratified this amendment.
